Creel was our first good chance to interact with the Tarahumara. There are a few families that live on or close to the Barrancas del Cobre lodge. As you can see these particular children didn't wear traditional Tarahumara clothing, preferring shirts and blue jeans. These kids were also unusually interactive, quite used to seeing Gringos and other travelers.

Even so, we were struck by how little we were able to communicate with them. They spoke some Spanish, but preferred not to speak at all.

For the most part, their faces were stoic, expressionless. But every once in a while...

The kids tolerated our picturetaking, but many of them remained distant.
