Noise

Occasional and random personal reflections by Doug Kaye.

WiFi Finder. I'm a hard-core hot-spot detective. Last week you could have seen me walking down Main Street in Ashland, Oregon, in shorts and sandals with my laptop open, looking for a connection. (I finally found one--free, no less--at Starbucks.) So I just *had* to get one of these gadgets from Kensington that ferrets out signals and shows signal strength using LEDs. Well, it works, but I'm less than impressed with its sensitivity. For example, I can use my laptop anywhere in my house, but the WiFi Finder only detects my Apple Airport within 30 feet. Not much good for drive-by searching.

Update: According to Kensington's web site, this little thing isn't even supposed to detect encrypted connections (like mine). More outside testing required!
