Web Hosting Strategies

Analysis and review of the web hosting and managed services industry by Doug Kaye.

MSPs by the Max. This must be my day for Max Smetannikov accolades. In addition to Max's good story about CDN reseller channels, InteractiveWeek has just published Max's excellent multi-part series on managed service providers. MSPs in Transition includes sections covering Loudcloud, Sitesmith, Cordiant, the failure of XUMA, the coopetition between MSPs and utility software vendors, and the the shift of some MSPs into management of enterprise applications. A good read for insiders and buyers of managed services alike.

I was CTO of NextMonet.com (a XUMA customer) and later a strategic technology consultant to XUMA. Because of the latter realtionship, I can't tell all that I know, even though the company is kaput. But I can tell you this: They could have made it. They had enough capital (at one time), and they had some good people. But they tried to succeed at too many things in a world where it's difficult to do just one thing well. Perhaps too much big vision and not enough reality and focus. But like I said, the opportunity was theirs to lose.
