Internet Content Delivery

Thoughts and links on Internet content delivery, caching and CDNs by Doug Kaye.

OPES is in trouble. "The Open Pluggable Edge Services (OPES) group is still hoping the IETF will give it the go-ahead to become a formal working group. But the organization continues to face criticism about just what standards it is proposing -- the latest from a group that studies the future of the Internet." [Source: Joyce Routson, Stardust CDN Week]

I've been on the OPES mailing list for a few months and have been reading it half-heartedly. I also downloaded and read one of their drafts, Extensible Proxy Services Framework. Much of the recent debate on the mailing list has been about this document, and I have to admit I was entirely underwhelmed by its significance. OTOH, I haven't read any of the other drafts, so it's not fair to condemn the entire effort just for one document. Judge for youfself.

Content peering and application services will certainly exist at some point down the road. But whether this group can pull it off is another story, yet to be written.
