Internet Content Delivery

Thoughts and links on Internet content delivery, caching and CDNs by Doug Kaye.

Opportunities for CDNs. Web Review author Andy Oram writes in Three Unconventional Sources for High-Bandwidth Internet Growth: "A massive demand for symmetric, high-bandwidth connections may foster an underground industry that can bypass the incumbent telecom network. I'll suggest three possibilities here; I'm sure others will emerge if people use their imaginations." [Tomalak's Realm]

Andy's first application (teleconferencing for the home) is too narrowband for CDNs, but the second (computer-mediated education) could include substantial streaming content. Cachability will vary, of course. The last category (low-budget entertainment) is sure to be a big category. We're already seeing content like that from BMW Films taking off, and of course there's the distribution of Steve Ballmer's screaming chicken impersonation. Okay, so the stuff from BMW Films doesn't qualify as low-budget, but you get the idea. I'm probably preaching to the choir, but CDNs need to pay attention to opportunities in this category.
